"One of the finest boutique hotels in Sri Lanka, superb Asian fusion cuisine , smooth as silk service" Lonely Planet 2007 .
|
.. this is one of Sri Lanka's gems - the epitome of a boutique hotel with no pretension, no formality and effortless style. This transformation of a 17th century merchant's house has already received acres of press coverage - all I can add is that it is not to be missed whether it's for lunch or an entire honeymoon! "... often overlooked in favour of the aman next door, but its a fraction of the price, the food is better and the chances are you'll have the courtyard pool to yourself. " Wallpaper Magazine |

“This
carefully considered transformation of an abandoned historic residential
compound into a stylish luxury boutique hotel has evocatively captured the
spirit of place of the colonial World Heritage fortified town of Galle. The
restoration has been carried out with sensitivity to the historic fabric and
the surrounding urban context, retaining the buildings modest scale and street
façade. The removal of unsympathetic elements has revealed the original Dutch
Villa and its later English architectural Dutch influences, while the elegant
interior design and modern additions have added new layers of meaning. The
restoration was undertaken using local expertise and craftsmanship. The
temporary adaptation of the hotel into an emergency shelter in the aftermath
of the 2005 tsunami and the subsequent contribution of the hotel to the
recovery of Galle through cultural tourism have demonstrated the potential of
such commercial ventures to contribute to community development in an historic
urban heritage context.”

The Jury Panel of the 2007 UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards
"I justified the whole thing to myself by saying that I would spend ten days writing there before the festival itself started, and that is, in fact, what I did. My wife and I established ourselves in a small, quiet hotel in the Old Fort at Galle (the Galle Fort Hotel) and every morning I wrote about Isabel Dalhousie while my wife read, swam, and saw the sights."
Alexander McCall Smith
